As cold weather is setting in, keep an eye on the weather forecast and when temperatures look like they will dip to the freezing mark, don’t forget to take special precautions to keep your water pipes from freezing. With just a few simple steps, you could save yourself from costly repairs.
Tips to prevent frozen pipes:
Inside:
- Open your kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors. This will allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. (Make sure to move any harmful cleaners up out of the reach of children and pets.)
- Turn on your faucets and let the water trickle.
- Set your thermostat to a temperature no lower than 55° F, even when you are traveling and away from home.
Outside:
- Ensure your garden hose is disconnected, drained and stored for the winter. Frozen water inside a garden hose will expand, increase pressure throughout your plumbing and could burst an interior pipe.
- Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
