Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be found in fumes of vehicles, stoves, generators, fireplaces, and furnaces.
Because it’s hard to detect by our senses of smell and sight, carbon monoxide can be leaking into your home without you even knowing.
Every year, hundreds of Americans die from carbon monoxide poisoning and more than 20,000 go to the ER from the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Be aware of symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Vomiting
- Chest pain
- Confusion
- Flu-like feelings
How can you prevent carbon monoxide poisoning?
Have your heating system, water heater, and all gas, oil, or coal burning appliances serviced yearly by a qualified and licensed service provider. (We do this as a part of our Clean & Check Service.)
Do not use portable flameless chemical heaters indoors. Also, make sure to never use a generator indoors. If you do need to use a generator, keep it more than 20 feet from your home.
Make sure your gas appliances are properly ventilated and are not leaking.
Clean your chimney each year. Debris can lead to a blockage, which can result in a build up of gas in your home.
Most importantly, install a battery-operated carbon monoxide detector in your home. Since carbon monoxide is invisible, odorless, and tasteless, a detector is imperative.
Yearly maintenance will keep those appliances safe. If you would like more details on how to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, the CDC has a handy FAQ guideline sheet.
