Cleaning the condenser coil on your HVAC unit is a straightforward process. The condenser coil of your HVAC system is located outside and is exposed to the elements.

Although as a homeowner, you don’t have to know exactly how your air conditioning unit works, you should understand that the condenser coil’s job is to release the heat captured by the inside evaporator coil. A dirty condenser coil will hamper the performance of your HVAC unit.

Grass clippings, leaves, mud, and other debris have their way of collecting around the condenser coil.  As a homeowner, you should routinely visually inspect the condenser coil and keep it free and clear of obstruction.

Clean coils will help with heat transfer, cooling capacities, and energy usage. Routine maintenance helps extend the life of your HVAC unit and helps you avoid costly repairs.

Most homeowners overlook the importance of routinely cleaning the condenser coil. Here are steps you can do to maintain the longevity of your HVAC unit.

Clear Away Grass and Leaves

Rake away leaves, pine needles, tree branches, and grass clippings that may collect around the base or on top of the condenser coil. Be sure to not let the grass grow too high close to the coil.

Brush Away Dirt

Use an air conditioner cleaning whisk brush to remove larger debris that collects between the fins of the coil.

Wash and Rinse

Spray coil cleanser onto the fins of the coil according to instructions on the product label. Let the cleaner do its job by loosening the build-up of debris. Then, rinse using your garden hose.

Bonus Tip: Straighten Coil Fins

Sometimes hail from severe storms or rocks flying from your lawnmower can hit your condenser coil and bend the fins. An affordable solution is to use a fin comb to straighten them. The prongs on the comb not only straighten the fins for better airflow but also can help remove some hard-to-reach debris.

Schedule Regular Maintenance

These affordable DIY tips will help with the longevity of your HVAC system. However, a more thorough clean and check done twice a year by an HVAC professional is a wise investment.

One of the most important choices as a homeowner is choosing the right team to maintain your home. We recommend spring and fall  HVAC Clean and Check Service to inspect your system and make sure all components are operating as they should.
