Springfield Missouri residents should be aware that if you have a sewer blockage, you must contact CU before clearing out the line.
The City of Springfield has been installing new gas lines to provide more customers with natural gas. Great news for the growing Springfield Missouri population.
Providing natural gas to more residents involves drilling, or boring, to accommodate the new utility. What the City of Springfield didn’t anticipate was an accidental boring into the sewer system. This has caused the urgency to take extra precautions when working on sewer blockages.
The issue was created by past unpermitted work on city sewer lines by various contractors. If the jobs were correctly permitted, the city would have known EXACTLY where all the sewer lines were located. Because of this, the permitted gas line contractors have unintentionally bored through both main and lateral sewer lines throughout Springfield.
All those years of unpermitted and unreported sewer work have caught up with Springfield. The potential ramifications could be deadly. As you can see, hiring a licensed plumber that will do the required permits and for your sewer work is extremely important.
What to do if You Have a Sewer Blockage
Currently, the City of Springfield has asked contractors to inform their customers to contact City Utilities if they have a plumbing blockage or drainage issue before they call a plumber.
City Utilities may need to dispatch a technician to check with their camera systems for any issues in their main sewer lines.
Because a gas leak could be in your sewer line, if you try to fix the blockage issue on your own, it could turn into a serious multi-block problem. Or worse, the DIY project could lead to an explosion or gas fire.
As plumbers, we are asked not to use sewer machines as the first line of resolution for line blockages. Sometimes there are other means to clear the line and currently we will try those methods first.
If you notice a rotten egg smell, this may be the first warning sign of a gas leak. Leave your house and then call City Utilities. CU can make sure the conditions are safe for you to return to your home and a plumber to service the lines.
If there happens to be a gas line in your sewer drain lines, the City of Springfield has promised to refund the amount you spend to have it fixed.
