Wheeeeew, it’s hot!
It’s SO hot that when you come into an air-conditioned building, you actually feel cold! This is the kind of heat where you don’t even want to go outside, let alone try to work outside! Mix in the humidity and that’s just overwhelmingly HOT!
Right in the dog days of the summer, it’s no wonder that Air-Conditioning Appreciation Days is July 3rd through August 15th.
While you’re appreciating your A/C this summer, you might say a word of thanks to its inventor, Willis Haviland Carrier. He invented air conditioning in 1902 to remove humidity from his printing press building. The byproduct of staying cool in the heat of the summer changed our comfort in the summer forever.
The biggest thing you need to remember to save money and to stay cool is to “set it and forget it.”
Unlike in New York City, where the rule is to keep their household temp at 78 degrees, you can keep your home a little cooler. But don’t make the mistake of thinking that in order to save money on your utility bill that you must adjust your thermostat.
Don’t turn off your thermostat while you’re out of the house and then turn it on when you return. That practice is not only hard on your unit because it’s working to catch up from being off during the day, it simply doesn’t save you any money. In fact, it costs you more!
Find a comfortable temp and leave it there. Your pocketbook and your air-conditioner will thank you for the “set it and forget it” philosophy.
Some other tips to remember for A/C Appreciation Days
- Change your filters often
- Keep your curtains and blinds closed
- Shade trees near your house help keep your home cool
- Schedule regular maintenance
Little things can save you a lot of money in the end. Setting your thermostat and leaving it alone is just one little thing you can do for big savings!
