A&D Mechanical | Air ConditioningAir conditioning is such a wonderful thing! But when it goes out, we tend to panic. Some people, like the elderly, or infants, really can’t be without A/C. So, it’s serious, when it’s not working properly.

Here are some common reasons your A/C may stop and some troubleshooting tips you can do to fix it.

Keep in mind, some conditions are more serious and might require a call to us to survey the situation.

Problem: Your condenser isn’t running

Troubleshoot:  Check for a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker. Lower the thermostat by five degrees and see if it kicks on. If not, the problem could be a faulty motor or compressor. You’ll need to call us to assess that issue.

Problem: Inadequate cooling

Troubleshoot: Start by lowering the thermostat by five degrees. If that does not fix the problem, you may have a dirty evaporator. Carefully clean the evaporator and let it run for a few hours. If the problem remains, it could mean your unit is too small for the area it is cooling.

Keep in mind that an extremely sweltering day could impact your unit’s effectiveness. If temperatures outside are over 100 degrees, you may not be able to achieve 70 degrees inside your home no matter how hard your A/C works, especially if you have a lot of windows letting in the sun’s energy.

Problem: Air unit shuts on and off repeatedly

Troubleshoot: This is another problem that can happen with a dirty or blocked condenser unit, as well as a dirty evaporator. Most of the time, giving the entire unit a good cleaning and removing any obstructions will eliminate the problem.

Problem: A/C unit is running, but not cooling your home

Troubleshoot: First check your thermostat to make sure it’s working properly. Then, check the condenser to see if it’s dirty or blocked. If it is, clean it and remove the blockage. The condenser can become blocked by tall weeds, grass or other airborne debris. Remember to frequently clear out the grass clippings that may get stuck in, around, and under the unit after mowing.

If the A/C still isn’t blowing cold air, this could be the result of a faulty compressor or an inadequate amount of refrigerant in the system. Again, these are problems that we should be called to address.
