Spring is here and that means pollen. Allergy-causing pollens from trees such as oak, elm, maple, alder, birch, juniper and saturate the air penetrating into our clothes, in our hair, on our pets, and even into our home.
To improve the air quality in your home and keep those allergens at bay, here are a few tips.
Change Air Filters Often
Air flow is one of the most important parts to an HVAC system functioning correctly. A unit cannot run without air flow. Pollen in the air will clog your filters. During high pollen months during spring and fall, it’s best to check and replace monthly.
Check Air Ducts
Check for damaged areas in your ductwork. Leaks in ducting can allow for additional dust in your HVAC system, clogging your filters, making your unit work harder and less efficient.
Vacuum Frequently
With more pollen in the air, it’s inevitable that you’ll be tracking allergens into your home. By vacuuming more often, you’ll help keep those allergens at bay.
Wash Curtains and Pillows
Your soft furnishings hold dust, dander, and dirt. Spring and fall are good times to do a major clean and that includes curtains, small rugs, and other items you might not normally wash often. Some can be thrown into the washing machine and dryer, some cannot. For those that cannot, a good shaking outside and a light spin in the dryer helps.
Install a Home Air Purifier
If you are particularly bothered by seasonal allergies, consider installing a home air purifier. Air purifiers work differently than filters. While filters remove particles from the air, purifiers work as a sanitizer.
You may not be able to control what allergens enter your home, but you can take simple steps in improving your home’s air quality. Keeping up on routine maintenance like filter changes, checking for leaks in ducts, and other small steps will help your HVAC system work more efficiently and save you money.
Spring is the time to schedule your system clean and check. We recommend having a professional check your HVAC before the heat of the summer arrives.
